Over the years, political figures have visited vegan restaurants in Las Vegas.
During the 2016 election, President Bill Clinton visited Simply Pure and Chef Stacey Dougan, causing the restaurant to go viral.
Senator Cory Booker regularly visits Violette’s Vegan, Tacotarian and other restaurants when he’s in town.
And now, Las Vegas can add Vice President Kamala Harris to its vegan-friendly politicians.
Today, Vice President Harris visited the Arts District Tacotarian location.
She was in town along with Second Gentleman of the United States, Doug Emhoff. The two are on a cross-country tour to raise awareness about the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Dubbed the “Hope is Here” tour, Las Vegas, one of the hardest hit cities from the pandemic, is the first stop.
VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS MEETS WITH CO-OWNERS KRISTEN AND CARLOS CORRAL AT TACOTARIAN IN THE LAS VEGAS ARTS DISTRICT ON MARCH 15, 2021.
“We literally had no heads-up and only found out last minute when someone approached us,” says co-owner Regina Simmons.
According to Simmons, a White House representative was in Tacotarian and let the staff know that the Vice President would be visiting in a few minutes.
Shortly thereafter, her motorcade, complete with staff, police, ambulance and press, arrived.
The Vice President took time to meet staff at Tacotarian, greeting them and customers before leaving with her order. She ordered two mushroom asada tacos, two carne asada tacos, and two super tacos.
“We threw in some desserts just in case she has a sweet tooth,” says Kristen Corral, co-owner.
Corral reports that the Vice President was polite and genuinely seemed happy to chat with everyone. She even mentioned how she’s dabbling with veganism and only eating meat after 6 p.m.
Vice President Harris told Corral she had learned of Tacotarian through Senator Booker.
“We were so honored that the Vice President of the United States decided to pop in today and try our little taco shop,” says Simmons. “When you wake up in the morning, you never think or wonder if the Vice President will stop in to our restaurant today. It’s just mind-blowing.”
