Beginning Monday, Oct. 4, there are more vegan options at Essex Market with the launch of Meatless Mondays. Vegans, Baby’s Diana Edelman and the Essex Market Vendors Association have partnered to celebrate plant-based dining and to bring vegan cuisine into the spotlight.
Every Monday, a member of the Essex Market Vendors Association will feature a special vegan dish for the day.
“When I decided to expand Vegans, Baby to New York City, my goal was to continue curating and creating events and showing restaurants the value of adding vegan dishes to menus,” says Edelman. “This partnership is an exciting first step towards my goal of making vegan options more abundant and working with organizations and restaurants to become leaders in the plant-based movement.”

Oct. 4, Mille Nonne
Meatless Monday kicks off with Mille Nonne, the Italian stall at Essex Market. Chef Pilar Rigon is offering two specials on Oct. 4. The first is mushrooms marinated with fresh herbs, ginger and balsamic vinegar. It comes with roasted butternut squash, arugula and quinoa (GF) or garlic bread. Alternately, they’re offering the dish as a sandwich.
“The Essex Market Vendors Association’s goal is to provide its customers and the Lower East Side community with fresh, high quality food. At Mille Nonne, vegan and vegetarian friendly options are a must, and a zero-waste approach is part of our daily cooking style. Meatless Mondays are opportunities to bring all these topics together,” says Rigon.
Oct. 11, Don Ceviche
Meatless Monday continues the following week with Don Ceviche. The popular Peruvian stall has created a mango ceviche with Peruvian pepper sauce and corn.
Oct. 18, Zerza
The third Monday of the month brings Zerza’s dish. The Moroccan stall is making roasted avocados with cilantro pesto alongside sauteed baby veggies and vegan harissa aioli.
Oct. 25, Puebla
Finally, on Oct. 25, Puebla is serving a heaping dish of veggies. The Mexican spot is making roasted potatoes with black beans, spinach, onion and guac, topped with a choice of red or green hot sauce.
Essex Market is one of the oldest markets in New York City. It offers an array of vegan options, including the all-vegan Riverdel Cheese Shop.
