New York City is one of the best cities in the world when it comes to vegan dining. From little pop-ups to high-end restaurants like the plant-based Eleven Madison Park, finding vegan food in NYC is easy.
But, what about finding vegan food to show off to your non-vegan friends? Also easy.
However, we’re here to make it even easer for you. In honor of World Vegan Day, here are five of our favorite vegan eats in New York City that you’re non-vegan friends will love. And, if you haven’t tried these yet, take this as your sign.
5 vegan dishes to try in New York City
1. Vegan Freddie Prinze, Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop
We’re suckers for pizza and when we find good vegan pizza, it’s all over. For something special and unlike any other slice in the city, head to Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop. Sure, they’ve got your New York slices, but they’ve also got Siclian. Or, should we say upside down Siclian slices.
The Vegan Freddie Prinze is an upside down Sicilian pie with a sesame seed encrusted bottom. It comes topped with Numu mozzarella, thick, tangy tomato sauce, Beyond meat vegan sausage and a sprinkle of Follow Your Heart parm.
If you want a killer one with a vegan cheese that’s a star being born, head to Vito’s Slices and Ices in Manhattan where they’re using Pleese Cheese.
2. Anything from Cadence
It’s really hard to narrow down what to order from Cadence. Which is why we wrote this post about our favorite dishes to order at Cadence. The East Village restaurant is a must.
3. The Bowery, Orchard Grocer
Orchard Grocer is an all-vegan grocer in the Lower East Side that also has a sandwich shop tucked into it. The Bowery is one of our favorite breakfast sandwiches. It’s filled with turmeric tofu egg, tempeh bacon and Violife provolone with spicy mayo to seal the deal.
4. Jerrell’s Betr Burgr
One of the best burgers we’ve had anywhere in the world, Jerrell’s Betr Brgr is a true gift to the city. Located in Soho, it’s a 100 percent vegan joint serving burgers, shakes, waffle fries and more. It’s also open way late to get all the hungry folks heading home after a night out.
You can’t go wrong with anything here, but the true winner is their Supr Betr. It’s a Double Betr Brgr made with Impossible patties and topped with vegan cheese, lettuce and tomato, grilled onions, pickles and Jerrell’s special sauce. Then, they also toss on vegan bacon, chili and jalapeños. You’re welcome.
5. Strawberry Shortcake, Whipped Urban Dessert Lab
If you loved those Good Humor Strawberry Shortcakes as a kid, then you’ll love Whipped’s Strawberry Shortcakes even more. The oat milk ice cream shop that’s garnering all sorts of acclaim, delivers rich, sweet decadence in every creation. But, the Strawberry Shortcake has our little vegan heart.
This vegan treat features their signature sweet creme base. First, the cone’s interior is drizzled with strawberry sauce. Next, the ice cream goes in. After that, the top of the ice cream is covered in strawberry crumble and patted in. Finally, it’s topped with strawberry sauce. Folks, this vegan ice cream is as good as it gets.
