Craving vegan mac and cheese in New York City? Head to S’MAC in the East Village to get your vegan mac and cheese fix.
S’MAC (aka Sarita’s Mac and Cheese) has been open since mid-2006 and is a vegan-friendly restaurant in the East Village. The fast-casual spot serves (drum roll) mac and cheese, including vegan and gluten-free options.
Founded by Sarita Ekya, a “Chopped” mac and cheese champion, S’MAC was the first restaurant focused entirely on mac and cheese.
Everything here is made in-house, including the pasta and vegan cheese which uses a blend of coconut milk, rice and potato flours.
Bonus: the restaurant is also home to a local community fridge serving those in need. Regularly, they’ll throw in some mac and cheese. If you’d like to contribute, you can donate and buy a meal for the fridge which gets restocked often.
How to order vegan at S’MAC
It’s pretty easy to order vegan at S’MAC. They have a vegan cheese so simply choose your size (nosh is good for one person) and then add three mix-ins to customize your vegan mac and cheese. It comes served piping hot in a skillet, but we like it well done for a little extra bake.
Add-ins include:
- parsley
- rosemary
- basil
- broccoli
- buffalo sauce
- figs
- garden veggies
- jalapeños
- kalamata olives
- roasted garlic
- roasted tomatoes
- salsa
- scallions
- shiitake mushrooms
- spinach with garlic
Our favorite customization features the creamy vegan mac and cheese with jalapeños, roasted tomatoes and roasted garlic. But, with so many ways to customize the dish, the sky is the limit.
