“Want to see the animals—but not eat them? Now you can with … on the first-of-its-kind vegan luxury tour. … You’ll view wildlife on safari at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, home to a wildlife rehab center, while also getting a taste of South Africa’s burgeoning sustainable plant-based scene. From a vegan high tea to a multi-course vegan dinner menu at La Colombe, rated one of the top 50 restaurants in the world, you’ll feast on locally sourced—often foraged—plant-based dining experiences from renowned restaurants and chefs throughout Cape Town.”

Culture, history, food and experiences hand-picked and not on other vegan tours
With exclusive and private experiences like foraging, special chef-driven experiences, ethical tours of townships, a visit to the first Black-owned vineyard and more, you'll see a side of Cape Town curated with intersectionality in mind, along with gorgeous nature, magnificent food and important education.

Four nights at a Michelin Key Big Five reserve spanning a whopping 25,000 hectares of malaria-free wilderness. With a focus on conservation, you'll witness nature at its most vulnerable and free from the outside world. Enjoy sunrise game drives, sundowners on the plains, visits to the Born Free big cat sanctuary and wildlife rehab center, and so much more. This is safari the way it was meant to be.

An intentionally small group experience focused on immersive culture, respect for nature and the land, and free from exploitation of people, animals and the environment. Highlights include a multi-course vegan tasting menu at one of the world's top 50 restaurants, a foraged experience, group prepared dinner and four nights surrounded by the calls of lions. An aligned group of travelers brought together by a lifestyle dedicated to compassion and freedom for all living beings.
Every day, every meal, every experience is presented so you know exactly what you’re saying yes to.

“Vegans travel for the food, and Edelman is pulling out all the stops. The welcome dinner alone showcases 14 dishes from across the African continent, veganized. The trip also includes a visit to one of the most biodiverse regions of Cape Town where a chef specializes in kelp and a luxury evening spent at La Colombe—one of the world’s 50 best vegan restaurants.”

March is the tail end of summer and one of the best times to visit. Days are warm and sunny, around 75–81°F (24–27°C), with cool evenings dropping to about 57°F (14°C). You’ll get roughly 9 hours of sunshine a day. There’s a small chance of a passing shower, but nothing significant. A light layer for evenings is all you need.
Late summer heading into autumn. Daytime highs hit around 77–82°F (25–28°C) and nights cool to the mid-50s°F (around 13°C). Early morning game drives are fresh, so bring a fleece. The vegetation is still lush, wildlife is active around water sources, and the light is stunning. It’s a great time to be there.
Cape Town: Light, breathable clothes for warm days. A jacket or wrap for evenings. Comfortable walking shoes. One nicer outfit for our special dinners.
Safari: Neutral colors only — khaki, olive, tan, beige, grey. No bright colors or white (wildlife and dust, respectively). Pack 2–3 lightweight long-sleeve shirts, 2–3 pairs of comfortable pants, a warm fleece or light jacket for morning drives, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and closed-toe shoes for walks. You probably already own most of this.
Both: Reef-safe sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, a small daypack, and any personal medications.
No vaccinations are required to enter South Africa unless you’re arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission, in which case proof of vaccination is required at the border.
The CDC recommends being current on: routine vaccines (flu, tetanus, MMR, polio), Hepatitis A and B, and typhoid.
Shamwari is malaria-free, so no malaria medication is needed for the safari. See your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure for personal recommendations.
No visa needed. U.S. citizens get a tourist stamp on arrival for stays up to 90 days. Nothing to apply for in advance.
Passport requirements:
South Africa enforces the blank pages rule strictly and has turned people away at the border over it. Check your passport before you book and renew early if you’re cutting it close. If you don’t have one yet, apply now.
No. But, you do have to respect it while we’re together and not order dishes that have animal or animal byproducts in them.
Everyday life is your business. When we’re eating, touring, and experiencing things as a group, everyone participates in the plant-based experience fully — no complaints, no opting out, no undermining the intention behind it.
The food on this trip is exceptional. Past guests who weren’t fully vegan have walked away changed.
Yes, everything will be vegan to the best of our control. Because vegan is not fully embraced, you may see others eating food that is not vegan, see animals being exploited in ways that may make you uncomfortable, see animal products for sale, or sit in furniture or rooms where animal skins or bones are present. We do our best, but until the norm is an end to animal exploitation, there may be times you find unsettling.
Traveling with a group of people who don’t know each other can be challenging and group dynamics play a large part in how a trip operates. Forunately, the people who come on this trip are warm, curious, and good company. Some guests have come back more than once, which says a lot.
If you’ve never traveled with a group, it is important to remember that your behavior, comments and how you show up directly impacts everyone else. We are not here to parent or police behavior, but it is vital that participants are always kind and respectful to each other and if there are any issues to speak privately to the host to remedy.
The trip is rooted in intersectional vegan philosophy — the understanding that how we treat animals, the planet, food systems, and other humans are all connected. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Show up open and you’ll fit right in.
People of all backgrounds, religions, sexualities, and identities are welcome here.
What this space doesn’t have room for: Islamophobia, antisemitism, racism, or support for any government or movement committing genocide or ethnic cleansing — against any people, anywhere. The compassion that brings us here extends to all humans without exception.
Any behavior that goes against this will result in immediate removal from the trip with no refund.
