Like other Overthrow offerings (including one of our favorite restaurants in the world, Cadence), Soda Club delivers an upscale experience with a woman creating the menu. Helmed by Chef Amira Gharib, Soda Club’s small dining room and private outdoor rooms gives guests a chance to see how delicious plant-based dining can be.
Walk through the plush velvet curtain and you’re transported to an elegant ambience that’s dotted with glimmering candles, marble tables and a swanky vibe. It’s a fantastic restaurant for a date, to get your carbs and wine in, or simply enjoy a plant-based meal in the East Village.
5 dishes to try at Soda Club
1. Arancini
These delightful morsels come served a top a bed of tangy tomato sauce. The Italian rice balls deliver a perfect crispy on the outside and creamy rice inside and come topped with shaved parmesan. It’s hard to pop only one, so if you’re more than a group of two, consider asking for two orders.
2. Watercress Salad
Salads rarely make our list of dishes to try, but the watercress salad at Soda Club is special. Perhaps it’s the kick in the cipollini dressing and the crunch of the pine nuts. Or, it’s the coconut cheese that’s remarkably, well, cheese-y. Or, it’s the rare addition of roasted grapes in the salad. Regardless, this salad is an excellent starter or share plate for two.
3. Gnocchi
The gnocchi at Soda Club is different from other gnocchi you’ll have. This one features pillowy gnocchi topped with a carrot top pesto that gives it a flavor all its own.
4. Buccatini
Our favorite dish at Soda Club is the buccatini. These thick noodles come tossed in a spicy arrabiata sauce that is rich and divine. On top of the pasta is crumbled focaccia and cheese.
5. Ravioli
While the portion is small, these ravioli are a highlight. The coolest feature of this dish is the “runny” yolk that spills out when you cut into it. Also stuffed inside is a creamy ricotta cheese. It comes with savory chanterelles and confit tomatoes and is definitely the most photogenic of the dishes.
Bonus: date cake
You’ve got to have dessert at Soda Club. Their date cake is a sweet way to end the meal. The thick cake comes topped with a scoop of ice cream and toffee sauce, and sprinkled with toffee. Grab a bite of everything together — the cake cuts some of the sugar-y sweet of the toffee and makes it hard to have just one bite.
And more …
Still can’t decide? Soda Club makes it easy and offers a pasta tasting for two for $75 per person. It includes a six-course pasta tasting and bottle of wine.
